Mia Taylor Painter

Mia Taylor intends to use the gallery to develop new work and evaluate her current practice

She plans to conduct a series of experiments that explore the spatial relationships between the real gallery space and the imaginary space in painting. This will involve responding to the architecture of the gallery, the activities that take place and the interactions between herself and other people (contributors, other 'Laboratory' artists, Jerwood employees and visitors) considering the function of the space and the impact of people regularly walking through it.

Screens will be present in the space allowing her to construct a mobile, temporary studio space to work in. This will offer an amount of privacy in a busy walk through area. Other contributors will be invited to take part in a collaborative project or a tutorial or conversational exchange. The resulting works will be on show, from conception to completion, and will display different aspects of the process simultaneously.

"My practice explores themes of distraction, space, time and duration and examines how time is perceived in a fast changing, time-poor, technologically based environment"

"My primary discipline is painting, which is traditionally two dimensional and associated with longevity and endurance. The content is often intuitive and discovered through the process. It is a response to history of art, changing physical and human geographies and social and personal ideologies. A painting can change radically many times before it is resolved and the process can take many months. Through an overlapping and layering of marks, imagery and meaning I hope to create work that transcends a specific location in time or space. For me, painting can represent a form of time-travel for the imagination, through which I aim to introduce a sense of personal imaginative time."
