rip it up and start again

In a 30 minute frenzy, yesterday, I drew three rather large scale pictures on paper hewn from one of those infuriating rolls of paper. At first I enjoyed what I was doing, then any miniscule particle of joy was expelled and replaced with raw fury; I utterly loathed what I had done. In the past I have definetly been unsure about things, yet still given them a bit of space to change my mind…not this time. A rather violent folding, and in the bin they went. I immediatley felt better. I think partly such emotionally charged behaviour is accountable to the public nature of the space – I felt like I had to disassociate myself from these works, pronto, as the mere thought of even one passer by considering these as passing the “jock mooney filter” filled me with woe.

Then again, isn’t that what this show is about? It is about the failings as well as the “triumphs”, and in any case it is all objective. So am I here to please myself, or am I here to somehow be neutral – is that possible? I don’t see how it is, but somehow it also feels like “cheating” to swipe away the mistakes and quickly lock them in the cupboard under the stairs.  So… at a group talk , these family secrets were unearthed from the bin and exposed. Something about their transition from an awful, in my view, set of drawings, to a peculiar – definetlly sculptural – set of crumped works seemed pleasing. So, for now, they may just be allowed to wallow in the space.
